Electricity consumers in Iowa have continued to be targeted this summer by scam phone calls that threaten electric service disconnection and ask them to purchase a prepaid card. The scam, which has occurred both in Iowa and nationally throughout the winter and spring, frequently targets Spanish-speaking customers.
ECI REC member-consumers have so far not been targeted, but the Cooperative urges members to remain alert. We do not ask consumers to purchase prepaid credit cards or make immediate cash payments over the phone. If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent ECI REC who demands payment or personal information such as your Social Security number, credit card numbers, or bank account information, hang up and call us.
As reported by Alliant Energy, scammers can also fake caller-ID displays to make it appear as if the call is coming from a real utility company. If you are the victim of a scam or attempted scam, contact local law enforcement and the Iowa Attorney General by visiting iowaattorneygeneral.org or calling 1-888-777-4590.
