The new engineering technician at ECI REC, Scott McLaughlin, is a familiar face for many Cooperative team members and member-consumers. He was first hired as summer help in 2003 on the line crews in Vinton and Independence. Though he knew very little about the electric cooperative utility business prior to that time, he decided quickly it was something he wanted to be a part of.
“I learned about the ‘cooperative’ way of doing things from the employees at ECI,” said McLaughlin. “It felt like one big family, with everyone doing their part to make the entire organization run smoothly.”
After he decided that he wanted to pursue a career in the electric utility business, McLaughlin enrolled in the Powerline Program at Minnesota West Community and Technical College. While waiting for a spot to open in the program, McLaughlin went back to Iowa State University, where he had been pursuing a degree in agricultural studies. After graduation, McLaughlin was hired by Power System Engineering (PSE) in Madison, Wisconsin, as a line staking technician. PSE has been hired by ECI REC over the last several years for their services in staking utility poles, work planning, and more.
“I worked for PSE for seven years on a variety of projects all over the Midwest, including some for ECI REC after the 2007 ice storm,” said McLaughlin. “My experiences during the three summers I worked for ECI REC helped me immensely at PSE, and I look forward to becoming part of this organization again and working for the members.”
McLaughlin began his new job on July 1. His duties include assisting with daily operations of the line department such as material ordering, communicating with construction and engineering contractors, helping with the safety program, and crew dispatching. He also helps maintain and upgrade the mapping and engineering model and assists members with questions regarding operations.
McLaughlin grew up in Mount Auburn, Iowa, and currently lives in Urbana. He has been married to his wife, Emily, for six years, and they have a four-year-old son named Jackson. Outside of work, McLaughlin enjoys spending time with his family as well as golfing, hunting, fishing, and generally just being outdoors.
