Grain Bin Safety

Planning a New Grain Bin? Call ECI REC First.

One of the most important first steps in planning a new grain bin is contacting East-Central Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative (ECI REC). Our team understands Iowa’s electrical clearance regulations for grain bins and can help ensure a safe environment for everyone who works and lives around them.

Under the Iowa Electric Safety Code, utilities may refuse to provide electric service to a grain bin constructed too close to an existing power line if it does not meet the clearance requirements established by the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) National Electrical Safety Code.

Iowa law establishes different clearance standards depending on whether the bin is filled using portable or permanent augers, conveyors, or elevators. The drawings below outline the specific clearance requirements for each scenario.

If you have questions about grain bin clearance regulations or need assistance during the planning process, please contact ECI REC at 877-850-4343.
