Power Outages: What to Do

East-Central Iowa REC (ECI REC) works to provide safe, reliable electric service. Some outages are unavoidable due to weather, wildlife, accidents, or issues on our power supplier’s system.

Power Outage Protocol

During an Outage

  • Report it: Call 877-850-4343
  • Turn off stoves, ovens, and non-essential appliances
  • Unplug electronics (TVs, computers, entertainment systems)
  • Keep fridge/freezer doors closed
  • Follow generator safety guidelines
  • Leave one light on to know when power is restored

Winter Outage Tips

  • Stay in a single warm room, away from wind
  • Use space heaters safely; never leave unattended
  • Open faucets to drip if temperatures are near freezing
  • Close off unused rooms
  • Do not use cooking equipment for heat
  • Use a fireplace if available and safe

 

 

 

Summer Outage Tips

  • Wear lightweight clothing
  • Stay on the lowest, coolest level of your home
  • Use natural airflow or battery-powered fans
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Cook safely using outdoor grills
  • Check on children, seniors, and those with medical needs
